Ian Spalding, the starting quarterback of North Bend’s football team and the school’s starting catcher in baseball, was climbing on rocks at Norton Gulch about 8 pm on May 31, 2020 when he slipped and fell into ocean.
According to KCBY.com, a witness report from the sheriff's office stated a "male subject was climbing on the rocks when he slipped and fell, striking his head." The witness also stated that Ian was observed in and out of consciousness floating in the ocean. Deputies arrived and contacted the witness who stated that they lost sight of the boy prior to police arrival.
A search was conducted through Sunday night and into Monday, when it was called off. The Coos County Sheriff’s Office said divers searched again Tuesday morning. The Coast Guard discontinued the search after it was unable to find a body.
Ian's body has never been found. If you have any information on the disappearance of Ian Spalding, please contact the Coos County Sheriff at (541) 396-7830.
