Three missing persons were last seen on August 3, 1973 in a lt Green 1967 Ford Fairlene. They were headed to Kentucky for a family reunion.
The missing are John Keyton, Martha Helmick, and Flora Helmick. NamUs 40137, 40103, and 40138 respectively.
UPDATE: The body of Martha Helmick was found on October 22, 2016 and identified in 2021.
According to the Lexington Herald Leader, on October 22, 2016, Lexington Fire Department crews found boney structures from a human foot and ankle when they pulled the front half of a rusted 1967 Ford Fairlane from the water during a training dive. When the back of the car was pulled out, a femur, two radiuses and an ulna were found, and an elevated shoe was recovered; Martha used a corrective shoe because she had a fractured tibia. The car was found 20 to 30 feet from shore, just downstream from the ferry.
At a news conference, Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn said that the three victims who disappeared after leaving Bridgewater, Virginia for Kentucky on Aug. 3, 1973, perished in the Kentucky River near the Valley View Ferry; however, the bodies of Flora Helmick and John Keyton have never been found or identified.
