Overview of Cheryl Vasquez
Cheryl Vasquez was last seen at the Circle K Store (10616 McCombs St) in El Paso, Texas on June 28, 1987 at 9:22 pm in the company of a white male with blonde hair. She was last seen wearing a white T-shirt with an animal design, blue jeans and possibly white slip-on sandals. The unknown male was driving a beige pickup with stripes on it. According to CharleyProject.org, Cheryl had gone to the gas station to buy cigarettes for a friend where she was last seen talking to an acquaintance, David Wood, in the store parking lot. Cheryl was never heard from again.
A week before she vanished, Cheryl Vasquez married Robert Dismukes. Dismukes was serving a prison sentence for burglary and attempted murder at the time of the marriage for crimes he committed in 1982; when he was 18 years old, Dismukes was part of a criminal gang charged with over 30 break-ins in the El Paso area. Cheryl's loved ones don't know why she married Dismukes but speculated that she may have been trying to help him avoid deportation. He currently lives in Germany.
Several other women disappeared from El Paso the same year as Cheryl (1987), many of whom were later found murdered and buried in the desert. The victims were all young women in their teens or early twenties. Cheryl Vasquez, along with two other victims, Melissa Alaniz and Marjorie Knox, are still missing. Cheryl had previously attended H.E. Charles Junior High School, the same school Melissa Alaniz and one of the other victims were attending when they disappeared; the victim who was a classmate of Melissa Alaniz also knew Marjorie Knox.
Cheryl worked at a fast food restaurant on Dyer Street and at the Matador Plastics factory in northeast El Paso at the time of her disappearance. While her case remains unsolved, police believe foul play was involved and that David Wood is responsible.
David Wood is a serial rapist who was paroled in January 1987; he was later convicted of murdering six of the El Paso victims, though he maintains his innocence to this day. He was sentenced to death in 1993, but his sentence remains under appeal, as his lawyers allege he is mentally retarded.
The murders of El Paso girls and women stopped after David Wood's October 1987 arrest for rape. He has not been charged in connection to Cheryl's case, and her body has never been found. (Information Sourced from CharleyProject.org)
