Sarah's car, a black Ford Mustang was found abandoned under an overpass with hazards on and the driver's side door ajar; a police officer calls the car in to be towed thinking someone left to get help. Sarah had left Matt Uland's home about five hours prior to her car being found.

Sarah's body was found on the side of the road by a train crew passing by. She had 22 stab wounds to her body, mostly sustained around her back, neck, and chest. She was stabbed forcefully and with a jagged instrument. She had just left her boyfriend Matt's house at around 1 am and was only a "short drive" away from her home. She wanted to get rest before she was due back on campus the next morning.

Where Sarah's body was found

Police respond to a call reporting a "prowler" in the area. The caller reported two people driving a car and parking it, as well as an unidentified person running through a field of a nearby church. They investigate the church parking lot and discover Diana's car (a red 1980's Pontiac Grand Prix), running with a Ruger Redhawk .44 magnum revolver inside. The handgun is later confirmed to be the murder weapon, and was previously owned by Tim and Diana. Police also recovered live ammunition still in the chamber and a spent round inside the vehicle. Police trace the license plates back to Diana and visit her home.

Trinity Church of the Nazarene

After discovering Diana's car in the parking lot, police visit her home and discover her lifeless body on the kitchen floor; the door was unlocked but not open. She was shot in the neck using the same gun found in her car. Her two children, aged 4 and six months, were unharmed. They were found next to her on the floor, crying. Her four year old son told police that "Someone shot mommy" and that the killer had placed him in the closet before leaving the home and taking her car. Diana's husband Tim was out of town for work and was quickly ruled out as a suspect. Neighbors were allegedly witness to the murder as it happened; the Ault's neighbor claimed he heard the gunshot and then quickly looked out the window to see Diana's silhouette collapsing to the ground.

Diana's Home

Using newly advanced DNA testing, police arrest Carolyn Heckert as a suspect in Sarah's murder and is held on a $500,000 bond. Authorities suspect that Carolyn and another unnamed suspect were involved in harassing and intimidating romantic rivals. Carolyn used to date Sarah's new boyfriend Matt Uland and was reportedly very jealous.
