Although little is known about the life of Rudy Benavidez-Zamora, that doesn't make his story any less important. We know he was only 23 years old when someone shot him in cold blood. Way too young to be taken away from all those who love him.
With only six days before Christmas, many people must have still been out shopping for Christmas gifts for their loved ones. It was a frigid day, with temperatures only reaching 45 degrees in New Orleans. As a matter of fact, it was about 45 degrees around 7 pm that Saturday, 12/19/2015. Rudy and his friend had just pulled into a parking lot near the intersections of South Salcedo and Baudin streets. As they exited the vehicle, two men approached his friend and attempted to rob him. The suspects then fired a gun twice, hitting Rudy in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
There had been several robberies targeting Hispanics in the same area where Rudy was killed. In early January 2016, investigators caught a break when they arrested Robert Jenkins, 35, for a series of armed robberies. Although authorities stated they have not ruled out a connection between the armed robberies and Rudy's murder, they have not found any evidence to link them.
