Patricia speaks to her father over the phone, telling them she wishes to go back home to Pittsburgh and that she was under stress. Earlier that day, her landlord, the last person to see her alive, says she seemed "hyper", but otherwise normal.

Bozeman, MT

The evening of April 20th, Patricia is 380 miles away from her home in Bozeman, MT. Witness Peggy Bueller and her father are travelling westward in Circle, Montana when they see a car travelling east driving on the wrong side of the road. Peggy swerves out of the way, avoiding the car, but the wrong-way traveller hits the car directly behind her, driven by Carol Heitz. Carol and the other driver are unharmed, and both immediately come out of their vehicles. The other woman approaches Peggy, who is sitting on the side of the road waiting for police, and stares at her, saying nothing. The woman then walks away, climbs a fence, and stands, staring motionless at the accident scene. She then calmly walks into the empty field.

Montana Highway 200 near Circle, Westbound

Peggy's father had gone into town to call for help, and when police arrived, they ran the license plates on the strange woman's car. Within 30 minutes of the car being investigated, the driver's identity was discovered to be Patricia Meehan's. Police immediately followed where Patricia had disappeared into the field, following prints matching her shoe size for 3/4 of a mile until the tracks dissipated. The search was called off at 3:00 AM. When notified of their daughter's disappearance, Patricia's family flies out to Montana and conducts their own search.

Montana Highway 200 near Circle, Westbound

The first notable sighting of a woman matching Patricia's description was days later, at a Hardee's diner in Luverne, MN. A police officer noticed a woman sitting alone in a booth, drinking water. According to the waitress interviewed, the woman had been there for over five hours and only left when asked, as the restaurant was closing. The woman then walked across the street to a 24 hour diner. When asked by the officer, the woman refused to give her name, and claimed to be from Colorado, and then subsequently Israel. No further action was taken by the police officer.

Luverne, Minnesota

The next day, a woman was seen at a truck stop in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The waitress reported that a woman matching Patricia's description was sitting in the truck stop cafe for about 12 hours, drinking coffee and talking to herself.

Sioux Falls, SD

The following evening, another waitress saw a woman matching Patricia's description sitting with a man in his 30's in neighboring Murdo, SD.

Murdo, SD

Almost a month after her disappearance, Patricia was seen in her hometown of Bozeman, MT at a diner. She came in in the morning, asking if she could be served quickly, as she had somewhere she needed to be at 9:00 AM, which just turned out to be "going shopping". Waitresses claimed that this woman seemed to be disoriented and talking to herself. There were further sightings of Patricia after this time, but with no specific dates or times, such as at a horse auction in Billings, Montana.

On or about May 30th, a woman seen matching Patricia's description was reportedly asking for a phone, since her car had broken down. The following week, a report of a similar woman came in. This time, her presence gathered a lot of immediate attention at the truck stop at Interstate 5, since she was yelling at passersby for directions to Aberdeen, Washington. There were many further sightings of Meehan by law enforcement in the Pacific Northwest. Some speculate that she might have been in the area because her ex-boyfriend Kurt Fletcher lived in the area.
