Overview of Laurel Jean Mitchell

Update. Two men have been arrested in connection to Laurel's death: Fred Bandy Jr., 67, of Goshen, IN and John Wayne Lehman 67, of Auburn, IN.

Laurel Jean Mitchell left the restaurant where she worked in Epworth Forest on the evening of August 6, 1975 with plans to walk to a nearby amusement park to meet with friends. Laurel was last seen by classmates walking towards the park at around 10:15 pm. The following day, fishermen found Laurel's body in the Elkhart River, approximately 15 miles away from the area she was last seen. Laurel's official cause of death was reported by officials as drowning, though her autopsy revealed that she had been sexually assaulted prior to her death, leading investigators to rule her death a homicide. Laurel's case quickly went cold, and her death remains unsolved nearly 47 years later.
