Mallard was employed at Can-Do Dog Grooming on Fairbanks Drive in El Paso, Texas in 1996. She arrived for work at 7:00 AM on October 2, 1996. Mallard was scheduled to meet her stepfather for lunch, but she worked past the appointed time and never called him. Mallard left work at approximately 1:00 PM and walked to the corner of Dyer Street and McCombs Street to catch a bus to her residence.
