As of July 14, 2023, Suffolk County Police have arrested Rex Heurermann in connection to the Long Island Serial Killer case. For more information, our coverage can be found here. This is a developing story.
Originally from Poughkeepsie, New York, Jessica Taylor had left home as a teenager, eventually moving to Brooklyn. She spent about three years under the control of a pimp, Khalil White (also known as “Remy”), occasionally traveling up and down the East coast. She had made statements about wanting to escape that lifestyle.
During a trip to Washington D.C., Jessica decided to return home. She left on July 15, 2003, and was reported missing by White later that day. Her vehicle broke down along the way, but she was able to hitchhike back to Brooklyn. She was reportedly seen a few days later, between July 18-21, 2003, at the Port Authority bus terminal in Manhattan. It is not known who recognized her there, although this information comes from the detective who investigated her case.
On July 26, 2003, her body was discovered in Manorville, New York, at the end of an access road off of Halsey Manor Road, just north of the Long Island Expressway. She had been dismembered and only her torso was found on a sheet of plastic. The medical examiner estimated she had died two or three days prior. She was not identified at this time.
A tattoo on her right hip had been mutilated with a sharp instrument. The tattoo was a red heart with an angel wing that said "Remy's angel" in reference to her pimp. Detectives released photos of the tattoo in an attempt to identify her. A Washington D.C. detective noticed the tattoo and linked it to Jessica Taylor seven months after her body had been found. Suffolk County police obtained DNA samples from her family to compare and a positive match was made. A private memorial service was held by her family in Poughkeepsie shortly afterwards.
Khalil White has connections to the “Nine Trey Gangsters” gang. In an interview in 2016, White stated he was a “gang leader.” He served time in a New Jersey jail from approximately 2004 to 2006 for aggravated assault and sexual assault.
On May 9, 2011, a skull, pair of hands, and a forearm found on March 29 at Gilgo Beach were matched to Jessica Taylor.
