Aubrey had previously moved out to New Mexico with her then boyfriend, Jay, earlier in the year. Jay told police that she had moved back to get help for her alcohol and drug abuse, however Aubrey told her aunt, Pam, that she was scared of Jay. Pam also states that Aubrey had told her that Jay had threatened to kill her if she left him.

Aubrey is usually in contact with friends or family members every day, and constantly uses her social media accounts. In December, Aubrey's communication with friends and family as well as her social media presence starts slowing, eventually stopping altogether.

Aubrey's stepfather files charges of assault and battery against Aubrey, however these are dropped quickly on March 1st.

Aubrey posts for the last time on her Facebook account when she shares an image of a chalkboard that states "you're never too important to be nice to people".

Before she leaves, she messages multiple people on Facebook, looking for a ride. According to her mother, Jennifer Byrd, Aubrey is planning on meeting someone that night, but it is not known whether anyone picks her up. Jennifer tells police that Aubrey came into the living room, where her mother and brother were, and informs them that she is going to meet a friend. This happens around 3:30am. Aubrey then leaves her home without her purse or important medication.

Her cell phone pings near her family's home at a mobile home park. It is unknown whether her phone is powered off or died.

After not seeing or hearing from Aubrey since March 9th, Aubrey's family reports her missing to the Delaware County Sheriff's Department.

An unknown woman, who claims to be Aubrey's friend, Deanette Rowbotham, calls Jay and tells him that Aubrey is being held against her will in Ketchum, Oklahoma for drug money she owes someone. Deanette continues to explain that Aubrey will be released when the debt is paid, and if they are not paid, Aubrey would be killed. When investigators question Deanette, they quickly learn that this claim is a hoax, and she is arrested and subsequently charged with extortion.

A search team with Oklahoma City Metro Search and Rescue Team, let by Brian Smith, conducts a search in a heavily wooded area near the Dameron home. This search leads to the discovery of a bloody sock, approximately a half-mile away from the home. The sock is submitted to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for forensic testing. According to Aubrey's aunt, Pam, they did not receive any conclusive results from this piece of potential evidence.

Shortly after Aubrey's disappearance, the 'Missing-Aubrey Dameron from Grove, Oklahoma' Facebook page is created by her family members to help raise awareness.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Pam, Aubrey's aunt, alleges that Jay, Aubrey's former boyfriend, told Jennifer, Aubrey's mother, that he had killed her. There is no evidence linking Jay to Aubrey's disappearance.

An area in Kenwood, OK is extensively searched over Memorial Day weekend and the following weekend after officials receive a tip claiming that Aubrey was buried in the area. During this search, a 'shallow grave' was found next to a black leather jacket. Nothing else is found during this search, and the jacket is sent off to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for forensic testing. Upon testing, the results for the jacket came back as 'inconclusive' as to whether it belonged to Aubrey.

A rally is held at the Delaware County Courthouse in Jay, OK to raise awareness in Aubrey's case and two other missing people, including Ritchie-Vaughn Ellis and Christopher Teel. This event is organized by the Northeast Oklahoma Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives organization.

After police receive a promising lead, investigators drain this pond by three feet and skim the pond in search for Dameron or any of her belongings. According to family members, the search is conducted after cadaver dogs alerted them to the pond. Several items were found during the search, including an 'old flashlight', fishing reel, and a plastic bag, but nothing related to Aubrey's disappearance.

A vigil is held for Aubrey one year after she vanished from Grove, Oklahoma. The vigil is attended by family members, friends, and community members to honor and remember Aubrey.

The 'Aubrey Alert' bill, or House Bill 1790, is introduced to the Oklahoma Legislature, which calls for missing adult alerts in Oklahoma, and brings more urgency when an adult goes missing. This bill, if passed, will notify members of the public of a "critically missing adult", when an adult is considered endangered missing.

Due to Aubrey being a transgender woman, feedback is immediately given by the House Public Safety Committee, explaining that they "absolutely would not support the bill being named for a transgender person", according to Pam, Aubrey's aunt. Because of this, the bill is renamed the 'Kasey Alert', for Kasey Russell, a man who disappeared from a casino in Seminole, Oklahoma in July of 2016.
