Overview of Trenton James Way
27-year-old Trenton James Way was known as being friendly and kind-hearted. Trenton's grandmother said she'd only ever had trouble with him once, when he was 6 years old and told a fib, and after he got in trouble, she never had any more trouble with him. He worked at as a clerk at the Kangaroo Express and for the Event Operation Group in Birmingham, where he was assigned to ESPN, UA Gameday Operations, Talladega Superspeedway, and the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. Mike Jones of EOG said Trenton was was a "very large but kind-hearted man who befriended everyone he met. He was a hard worker who always put others first."
On the night of December 15, 2015, Trenton was working the night shift at the Kangaroo Express on Highway 150 and Fairfax Avenue. Around 1:30 a.m., an unknown individual entered the Kangaroo and robbed it of not only money and other unknown items, but also Trenton's life.
Authorities released still images from the surveillance camera of the suspect. Within hours of releasing the image, a potential witness contacted the authorities.
Early on authorities stated they had some person(s) of interest, but no one has ever been charged. They believed there was more than one suspect, but only one went inside the Kangaroo station. Witnesses arriving at the store during the time of the robbery, stated one of the suspects left and another shot was fired outside the business on the way out. The suspect was described as an African American male approx. 5'10 or less with medium build and seen running towards Fairfax Ave. with a trash bag of money and merchandise.
Six years later, Trenton's case remains unsolved.
