Overview of Shandon Barnes, Jr.
Shandon 'Big Man' Barnes, Jr. was a father of 4 young children and was only 26 years old when he was killed. His sisters described him as the kind of guy who would pick you up when you were down and bring a smile to your face.
On Friday, 09/12/2014, around 4pm, Shandon was driving in a blue Chevrolet Trailblazer in the Algiers neighborhood on Flanders street in New Orleans when someone in a 4-door silver car opened fire. His vehicle came to a rest when it crashed into the fence of a two-story apartment building near the busy intersection of Socrates and Flanders street.
Upon arrival, authorities found Shandon slumped over the steering wheel. He had been hit multiple times, including once in the head, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Through investigation, authorities believed Shandon had a confrontation with someone a couple of months prior and thought maybe this was retaliatory for that incident.
Two months later, homicide detectives announced that they were trying to locate the whereabouts of 24 year old Wellington Cornin, Sr. The detectives believed that he may have additional information about the shooting death of Shandon Barnes, Jr. About 1 year later, Wellington was arrested and charged with the shooting death of 26 year old Aaron Bannister. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received a 20 year sentence for that crime. Meanwhile, authorities believed they were getting closer to naming a suspect and stated they needed more information to take this case to court. Wellington has never been formally accused of Shandon's murder, and this case is still open.
Shandon's sisters are pleading for somebody to do the right thing. "Say what you know, what you've seen, what you may have heard. Just give my mom some kind of clarity, my family some kind of closure,"
