Rene Alvarez, a native of El Salvador, worked as a construction worker and was a husband and father of 3.

It was a little past closing time during the early morning hours of Sunday, 11/13/2011. Rene was still inside the Latin Club when a black male walked in with a gun and started demanding money from the people still there. Rene grabbed a handgun and started shooting at the man, who returned fire, striking Rene in the chest. The suspect fled the scene in a red vehicle.

Police responded to a shooting call at the club at 2:56 am and found Rene with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and passed away.

Authorities do not have a motive or a suspect at this time, but they hope someone will come forward.
