On January 4, 2012, 54-year-old Cedric Dickson had been working on his home earlier in the day and later went to visit a friend. According to a statement by Birmingham homicide Det. Jeff Steele to AL.com, Cedric returned home around 9:00 p.m. to find someone waiting in his driveway.

Det. Steele stated Cedric was shot multiple times by two or three gunmen who stole Cedric's gun and his cellphone.

Cedric was rushed to UAB, but later died from his injuries.

Birmingham PD stated several people claimed to have heard gunshots, but no one would admit to seeing who fired the shots. A neighbor also claimed to have seen the gunmen standing over the victim.
