Overview of Bernard Breaux
Bernard Breaux was described by family and friends as a happy and giving family man. He was a father to 8 children, whom he called the B-Nation, and he loved doing things with them. Bernard was engaged to be married to Kristina Garza, the mother of his three youngest children, at the time of his death. He had tons of family and friends and was loved by many. Bernard was only 46 years old.
On Monday, 03/07/2016, with a high of 75 degrees, it was a beautiful day to be outside. Bernard was getting ready to barbecue and had his 2 youngest sons, ages 4 and 2, outside with him. Bernard's youngest, a newborn, was inside the house with her mother.
Around 2:15 pm, two men in ski masks and dressed in dark clothing approached the Breaux home at 3629 Hollygrove St. in New Orleans and opened fire, striking Bernard multiple times. A neighbor stated she heard about 7 gunshots and then heard a second burst of about another 5 gunshots. Corey McDermott, Bernard's long-time friend, didn't see the shooters but heard the shots from down the street. He raced to Bernard's house and tried to help his friend. As Corey looked into his friend's eyes, Bernard repeatedly said, "Help me." Corey said, "That's what kills me, looking into his eyes." Bernard was taken to the University Medical Center, where he died.
This wasn't the first or second time that tragedy struck this family. Bernard's younger brother, Kenneth, was murdered when he was only 15 years old in the 1980s. On 04/20/2012, Bernard's son, 19-year-old Brandon Baker, who was about to graduate from high school, was also murdered. Authorities believed that Brandon was targeted as retaliation in an ongoing feud between his brother, Bernard, and another man. Garvin Scott, 25, was charged and convicted in February 2015 of second-degree murder in Brandon's death.
Investigators are still looking for possible suspects and motives, and no arrests have been made. This case is still open.
