Overview of Ruvil Hale

Ruvil Hale vanished from a Kentucky nursing home in 1990.

Ruvil was last seen at the Paintsville Health Care Center in Paintsville, KY on July 3, 1990 around 10:25 am. At the same time a 1988 Ford Tempo was stolen from the parking lot of a next-door restaurant. Witnesses reported seeing a gray-haired man driving the car southbound towards Prestonburg, KY.

Ruvil did not have his medication with him when he vanished and only had $2 in cash with him and he never cashed his last disability check. Authorities believed that Ruvil may have stolen the car, which only had about a half-tank of gas at the time, but his caretakers from the health care center believed that he would not have been able to drive that far of a distance, especially not without his medication. Ruvil and the stolen car have not been seen since.

The search for Ruvil began shortly after he vanished and continued for three days after he disappeared. Authorities conducted aerial and ground searches in a 20 mile radius of the health care center, as well as the southern portion of Johnson County, KY. They searched lakes, roadways, and rivers, but they were unable to find any sign of Ruvil or the car.

A private investigator begins his own investigation.

A private investigator was hired by Ruvil's family shortly after his disappearance. He later shared that he believed that Ruvil may have been killed by someone connected to the nursing home where Ruvil was last seen. During his investigation, he discovered a scam that some of the employees of the nursing home were involved in, leading him to believe this may have presented a motive to kill Ruvil if he found out about it. None of these theories have ever been verified, no one was ever charged in the proposed scam, and no one has been found responsible for Ruvil's disappearance.

Where the case stands today.

Today, Ruvil has remained missing for more than 32 years. He was declared legally deceased on July 7, 1996, nearly six years to the day of his disappearance. Ruvil's case has remained labeled a 'cold case' since shortly after he disappeared, due to a lack of new information or evidence being found.

At the time of his disappearance in 1990, Ruvil was described as a 43 year old caucasian man with gray or partially gray hair and brown eyes. He was 6'1" tall and weighed approximately 208 lbs. Ruvil has discoloration on his right cheek and a scar on his head. He previously fractured his skull and one of his arms. He is missing his gallbladder and his left arm is crippled. In 1990, he smoked cigarettes. He may spell his name "Ruble". Ruvil suffered from seizures, severe headaches, poor coordination, a paralyzed throat which caused him to choke easily, drastic mood swings, double vision, and muscle weakness in his legs. Today, Ruvil would be 74 years old.
