A jury found that Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, was liable for emotional distress and medical negligence against Maya Kowalski.

The story of the Kowalskis became a high-profile case after Netflix’s “Take Care of Maya” documentary which explored her 3-month stay in the hospital battling a rare pain syndrome.

While in the hospital, Maya’s mother, Beata, was wrongfully accused of abusing Maya and wasn’t allowed to see her. After being away from her daughter for 87 days, Beata took her own life.
