In January of 1967, Edward and Ruth Morse welcome their beloved "oops" baby, Kimberly Sue Morse. Her birth comes along when the couple's three older children - Sandy, Cathy, and Carl - are all nearly adults. Kim is raised happily with her family in the small town of York, Maine, and enjoys a wonderful childhood.

After Kim graduated high school in 1985, she works in a variety of jobs, mainly in the service industry. In all of these jobs - waitressing, driving a limo, working in a cafeteria in a hospital, being a chambermaid in a hotel - the common denominator is that they afford her the opportunity to interact with people. Kim also gets very into fitness at this time and becomes an aerobics queen and bodybuilder. Kim and her cousin Nancy become well-known on the Maine Coast's bar and party circuit, hitting all the night spots and basically being the life of the party. Motivated by her zest for adventure, love of performing, and the possibility of supplementing her income, Kim begins entering bikini contests in bars during the summer, often winning prize money.

As she nears her 30th birthday, Kim decides to move to Providence and begins a part-time job dancing at the Foxy Lady Gentlemen's Club. She figured dancing wasn't that much different than participating in bikini contests and would bring in more money. Her obvious beauty, sparkle, enthusiasm, and the warmth that had drawn people to her all of her life are evident, and Kim is able to make very good money working only a few nights a week. She defies the stereotypes of her workplace, as she is drug-free, focused, goal-oriented, and extremely careful. In her free time, Kim continues to travel, visit home and - as always - make friends wherever she goes. She dates a few men, mostly attractive fellow bodybuilders, but spends most weekends visiting her family in Maine.

Despite living in Providence, Kim makes frequent weekend trips back to her hometown of York to visit her family and friends. She takes a deep interest in a young girl who lives down the block from her parents. Kim becomes her unofficial guardian and is almost a second mother to the child. Also during this timeframe, she becomes friendly with a work colleague, Becky, who is studying to become an aesthetician at the Warwick Academy of Beauty Culture. Kim, with an eye on her future as always, decides to join her in her studies and enrolls in the school as well.

After the death of their beloved father that summer, the sisters decide to take a road trip to see their other sister Cathy in Ohio. Sandy picks up Kim in Providence and they proceed on their trip. During the trip, Kimberly's phone is blowing up with calls and texts from her former boyfriend, Anthony Penny. Kim had broken up with him and he did not take the rejection well, saying ominously " “Women don’t break up with me. I break up with them.”

Kimberly attends her last shift at the Foxy Lady Gentleman's Club. Earlier that day she had spoken to her sister, making plans to come home to York that weekend for a joint birthday celebration with Sandy. It is an ordinary night, and at the end of her shift, Kim is signed out and escorted to her car by the club's security, as is their standard practice.

After her shift, Kimberly arrives at her basement-level apartment between 1:40-1:50 am on January 19. Almost immediately upon entering her apartment Kimberly is attacked and killed, only having time to take off her gloves and set her keys on the kitchen counter. She is assaulted from behind, stabbed, and her throat is slit. A neighbor later tells investigators that he had heard a thumping sound but no scream, followed by footsteps. Additional sources state that the door to Kimberly's apartment was ajar at the time she arrived home.

When the fire department arrives at Kimberly's apartment, they enter the building and make their way to the bathroom. In the bathroom, they find the fire contained in the bathtub, along with Kim's body. Kim’s body is laying face-up in the tub, draped with towels that covered her torso and legs. Her remains had been doused with gasoline and set on fire. Firefighters extinguish the fire and contain the flames. After the smoke clears, they immediately noticed blood in the kitchen, hallway, and bathroom, and quickly call the police.

Police immediately note that this crime was personal. They believe that the person responsible for Kimberly's death knew her personally, and possibly had a key to her apartment. As for evidence in the case, police have collected the killer's DNA, but have not received any matches.

Four months following Kim's death, her sisters announce a reward of $20,000 for information. The money was raised by friends of Kim’s family and the Carole Sund-Carrington Foundation.

In 2014, an anonymous email comes into the North Providence Police Department, with information leading investigators to Michigan. According to the department, the tips were discussed with the Michigan State Police, and although it did not lead to an arrest in Kimberly's case, they were able to rule out a few potential persons of interest.
